“Outstanding service. They were extremely careful delivering the extra large container into our driveway.” -- A. L. GARNER
PSBURG, Pa. - Phillipsburg town council amended its Riverfront Redevelopment Plan to allow storage of waste disposal containers and trucks within the Riverside Commercial zone. But the story isn’t over yet. A last-minute wording change opening the ordinance up to storing empty commercial waste containers — the original intent of the zoning change — set the stage for a third and final reading on Aug. 7.The decision to amend the Riverfront Redevelopment Plan has polarized town residents. At Tuesday’s regular council meeting, opponents of the zoning change argued that a trash company was a nuisance that didn’t mesh with the town’s envisioned future. Supporters argued that Phillipsburg was an industrial town at heart and that denying one trash hauling company business was hypocritical when the town stores its own hauling trucks in the armory.Riverside Commercial Zone is located east of Union Station bordering the river.LMR Disposal LLC has been operating on South Main Street in Phillipsburg since 2015, first leasing the property. They have since taken over the site, but are not in compliance with town zoning code.Having storage of empty waste containers wi... Long Beach High School students and various other environmental organizations took part in the International Coastal Cleanup Day on Sept. 16 on Riverside Boulevard in Long Beach. The beach cleanup initiative was coordinated by the City of Long Beach, Fabien Cousteau Ocean Learning Center and art teacher Laura Swan's "Stewards of the Sea," assisted by Long Beach High School student Harry Murphy. It brought members of the community together to make an environmental study of the debris found on our shoreline. Litter in various forms was removed and registered carefully to help preserve the beach's natural beauty and cleanliness. The middle school art students were requested by Cousteau to take the efforts a step further and make a "trash sculpture" from the debris that was collected. Thanks to the efforts of the beach maintenance crew, they assembled sanitized pieces of trash to form the image of a "sea person" that illustrates nature's magnificence while spreading awareness about protection of the waters. They appropriately titled the piece, "Salvaged Riva," as Riva means "from the shore" in French.Materials such as bottle caps, beach toys, plastic lids, balloons and more were thoroughly washed and separated into categories. The students used these, as well as natural elements like shells and driftwood, to create their design over a paper mache foundation. Even the backdrop, a painting featuring colors of...

Stamford home to help out, especially with Miller, who is now 5.“We’re lucky we have family,” said Goodbody, who teaches third grade at Riverside School in Greenwich. “It’s been hard being the only driver with doctor’s appointments and after-school activities. Being on disability also cut our finances. It’s difficult to wrap your head around.”While trying to get by day-to-day, Goodbody said other responsibilities, like home maintenance, sometimes fall on the back burner. So a friend of the couple’s from high school decided to nominate the Stamford family to win a free roof from Prizio Roof and Siding Co. of New Canaan.“Friends and family try to find ways to help,” Goodbody said. “He thought it’d be something to help us long term.” In July, Jonathan Prizio and his wife, Heather, announced they would be accepting nominations through Aug. 31 for a Fairfield County family to win a free roof from Prizio Roof and Siding Co. through a partnership with No Roof Left Behind, a national organization that helps homeowners in need of assistance. Jonathan Prizio said 11 families were nominated for the free roof. The families came from all over Fairfield County from Bridgeport to Darien to Stamford. He said he received nominations for elderly couples, single parents and grandparents raising their grandchildren.Prizio narrowed down the 11 nominees to four by checking out the roof of each person nominated to make sure the job was something he could easily complete. Some of the roofs were in fair conditions, but some were so bad they required whole construction projects.“You want to do them all,” he said. “That was the hardest part, trying to decide to pick the four.”The winning family was chosen by the public. Goodbody said friends and family helped by giving their entry a big push via social media and email.“It was a whole network spreading the word,” Goodbody said. “It had a fabulous outcome.”The project was completed in the span of about eight hours, beginning in the morning and working into the mid-afternoon.
