The trash is just unending. Buffalo Bayou, White Oak Bayou, just between the two of them drain about 227 square miles of urban streets. Down by the water, he shows us its replacement: the Bio-Vac, a Frankensteined-together vacuum boat custom-made by the operations team from repurposed street-sweeping equipment. Rather, LeBron would seemingly be willing to sacrifice the extra millions he could get by resigning with a new team for the assets it would cost his new team in the trade, if that makes sense.) Stink, because we'll ask this: Would Lebron James being willing to waive his no-trade clause be the most interesting thing that could possibly happen in sports during the next 24-plus hours?OK, let's clarify. We must take all deaths off the books. And cheating/sexual scandals, because let's be honest, after the Michigan State stuff, 'interesting' is not the right word.Which brings us back to LeBron and the talking point of his no-trade clause. Multiple teams have, according to this story, inquired about whether LeBron would waive his no-trade clause. It makes sense. The Cavs are free-falling. Other than James, that roster is a first-round flame-out waiting to happen. It also makes sense for the Cavs to look to deal James. He's a free agent at the end of the season. The team rightly does not want to deal the unprotected Nets' No. 1 pick. (As of right now that pick is a lottery pick but is only three wins ahead of Atlanta for last place. Tanking Fever, catch it.)It also makes sense for LeBron. He can craft where he wants to go. Heck, he likely could craft a deal that would include a spot for BFF Dwyane wade, too.)This Cavs structure is broken. LeBron hates owner Dan Gilbert and vice versa, regardless of the chance each presented the other for redemption. It's done. And LeBron is headed somewhere.But if he would agree — and the construct of a deal could be woven — would that not behoove both sides. On Nov. 5, Campos-Martinez and de Guerra worked the evening shift, starting at 4 p.m., at the KFC on University Boulevard West, three blocks east of Georgia Avenue.Campos-Martinez left the restaurant at 11:45 p.m. De Guerra left less than an hour later, at 12:30 a.m.Police began their search for her later that day. During the investigation, they learned that de Guerra and Campos-Martinez were involved in a relationship, according to a police charging document.It wasn’t clear from the arrest records how quickly police suspected that Campos-Martinez was responsible for what had happened to de Guerra.At 3:30 p.m. Friday, her body was found “partially obscured by trash behind a dumpster” behind a building along University Boulevard West.“The victim appeared to have suffered trauma to her head and face, and there were defensive wounds to her hands,” detectives wrote in court records.Investigators spoke to Campos-Martinez.He said that after he’d gotten off work late Sunday night, he waited near the KFC for de Guerra to get off work. He said they met up, she told him she wanted to break up and an argument ensued, according to police.Campos-Martinez “disclosed punching the victim three times and pushing her to the ground where she hit her head,” court documents allege.Campos-Martinez said de Guerra appeared to be unresponsive. He took her purse and cellphone and called a taxi to leave the area, according to the documents.Campos-Martinez also said that he discarded the cellphone and purse in a dumpster after he got home.The charging documents do not detail any further questions detectives may have asked Campos-Martinez, such as whether he tried to call 911 after he saw de Guerra appear to be unresponsive.Detectives charged him with second-degree murder, which does not carry with it the premeditation needed for the state’s more serious charge of first-degree murder. In cases like this, evidence is presented to a grand jury to see if the case should proceed. During that process, the specific charges also can change.
Many of them went to Texas to clean up after Hurricane Harvey a week before Irma pummeled Florida and Georgia. Irma’s huge trail of destruction further spread out the people and equipment that responded.But there’s not much cities can do about it, says Stermer, who is the Broward County League of Cities' point person on debris removal. “What are we going to do? Go to court?” he says. “That’s not going to fix the problem today. Everybody wants it done, and they want it done yesterday.”That said, the Florida attorney general’s office is investigating at least three waste-hauling companies to determine whether they tried to gouge cities by raising their rates after the hurricane hit.Attorney General Pat Bondi sent the companies subpoenas as part of an investigation into allegations that the contractors are not doing work for the rates they negotiated before the storm, are holding off on doing work until they can negotiate higher rates or are responding slowly for their contract work.“Sitting debris is a health and safety hazard and needs to be removed as soon as possible – but instead of doing their jobs and helping Floridians recover, apparently some contractors are delaying the work or requesting higher rates,” Bondi said in a statement.Another big source of frustration for Florida city officials? The high concentration of gated communities. The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has a long-standing policy that it won’t reimburse cities for the cost of removing debris from private property, including gated communities.That's a problem, says Stermer, the Weston mayor. Most of his city, in fact, is made up of gated communities. The public roads look great, he says, but the situation in gated communities varies widely. Some homeowners associations have used their reserve funds to pay for clean-up, but others are still waiting to see whether the city will do it.
